The Premier League was formally organized in 1991, after England had experienced a general decline in football interest following strong European dominance on the international stage. A proposal was set forth to organize a new "top league" in Engl and, where the most successful
and powerful football clubs would compete. The result: on July 17, 1991, the "Founder Members Agreement" was drafted, and the English Premier League was born. The first official season was held between 1992-1993, with regular matches contested by 22 different teams in the league.

At this time, there are 20 teams in the Premier Leauge, who compete between August and May. Each team plays every club twice, once at their home stadium, and then again away at their opponent’s stadium. Teams are ranked based on a simple point system: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Should there be a tie, the goal difference is considered, followed by the total number of goals scored are each considered. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is deemed champion.
Also, 4 teams from the Premier league are eligible to compete in the UEFA European Champions League each year. The top 3 Premier league teams automatically enter in to what’s known as "group play" for the UEFA cup, while the 4th ranking team faces off against teams from other major European that didn’t automatically qualify for group play.
Traditionally, the Premier league betting scene is dominated by what’s known as the "Big Four" teams: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Since the league’s inception, Manchester United has won the championship the most times, raising some concerns that the league is quickly becoming unbalanced, since the other 16 competing clubs rarely beat the "Big Four". All the same, Premier League betting continues, and is the highest draw for major UK sportsbooks.
